25 years have passed, but the curse of Woodsboro is far from the end. Ghostface has returned to reap victims. Sidney, Gale and Dewey return to the city to unveil the killer once more. Who is hiding this time under the mask became famous thanks to the horror franchise Stab?
Let’s start from the end but without spoilers. The dedication to Wes Craven is owed and almost draws a tear, especially for the lovers of this horror saga that has revolutionized the entire teen slasher genre that Craven invented with Nightmare. The formula to draw on the genre’s staples to build the perfect horror is still infallible, what’s essential is not derailing and screenwriters Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt wisely follow this path. They’re both meta-horror, although in different forms.
The couple perfectly assimilates the lesson of Kevin Williamson (here’s one of the producers) updating the franchise and seasoning it with tasty catchphrases and a couple of tributes (including the surname of the two sisters victims of Ghostface, Carpenter) that further emphasize that the concept of Scream is potentially eternal, as Michael, Jason and Freddy.
Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox coming back is a blow to the heart. The young cast is doing very well, with a note of merit for Jasmin Savoy- Brown who is also among the protagonists of the already cult series Yellowjackets.
If you haven’t seen the whole Scream saga, retrieve the third episode that unveils ten years in advance what would have happened in Hollywood in 2017. And also the unlucky Cursed, another Craven’s teen horror that would deserve a second chance after twenty years.
